It's on!

Ok, so there is a serious lack of film festivals in the Raleigh area. The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival sells about 30,000 tickets a year, so there is definitely a market for it, too. I think I am going to start moving ahead on getting something together.

So, here are the next steps. We need a name and something official, like a website, that I can use when I'm calling around to find a venue to rent out, so that we look organized and have more leverage to make a deal. I have scoped out some of the local independent theaters and they do rent out space, so this is probably the best place to contact first. Maybe they will even sponsor the festival if I am charming and show how organized we are.

Who has a good name for a film festival, and should we have some kind of theme? I think it would be cool to limit entries to digital formats. We can celebrate low budget guerrilla film making. I'm blanking on good names, though.

It should have some cool acronym so it is easily differentiated from other festivals.

something like using the acronym:

E
R
I
N
O

works

Kev,

Please don't limit it to digital videos, or rather please don't let this turn into a youtube type film festival with films shot on cell phone cameras. Maybe you could have a minimum resolution limit? There was a film festival at Grinnell called Titular Head. You should look into how that was run. Here is a link to an article about it. http://web.grinnell.edu/sandb/archives/volume_118/number_22/arts/3titular.html

Again, since it all didn't show up the first time.

If getting money is based on your charm, we're screwed....

What about something local flavored? The Triangle Film Fest or something like that.

BTW, Brainaparte wants a sketch of your favorite french actress.

I don't want a local name to it because when I move out of here I'm taking my festival with me.

Kris, there is nothing wrong with digital film. It is now the majority media for independent filmmakers now, anyways. People who shoot Youtube videos on cell phones don't submit those videos to film festivals, and if they do, then we will be reveiwing entries anyways. I'm not putting any limitations on that. If someone has the ability to make a good movie using a cell phone, then so be it. The objective of making this a digital only festival is more logistical. It'd be easy to just require a digital projector from our venue.

And I did see Brainaparte's request, and have not forgotten about it. It's been a hectic week and I haven't had a chance to do anything sketch-wise. Look for something this weekend. I'm also going to try to get me and DrX's political cartoons done and post them. Hmmmm, this blog is coming close to becoming work...

It isn't that I have a problem with all forms of digital media, I just don't think you should limit it to digital media only. I don't know much about film making, but what if someone wanted to shoot it on film then transfer it to a digital file. How difficult would that be? Would you still accept that? The youtube/cell phone complaints was sort of separate to that. I wasn't very clear the first time. That is what happens when typing is difficult and you are trying to minimize how much you have to type, but I took my brace off for this response so it is easier.

You're gonna move???

I'm not planning on living in Raleigh for the rest of my life. A few years at max, I'd say.

Yeah, I'm not too sure about digital transfers of film. I kind of like the idea of celebrating the independent/low budget spirit of making movies with digital video. It's the every man's media. But we have plenty of time to think about this. I may put it off until I make a movie and experience the inner workings of other film fests. It doesn't hurt to plan now, though. And I'm really motivated to make a film this summer.

Awesome. Glad to see you motivated, and that there's some blog heat on this! My ideas are always good. Just don't ask the NIH. Gimme my grant money, fuckers.

Ahem.

Anyway, what about BFBFest? You don't even need to explain what BFB stands for. Make it cryptic.

Regarding film vs digital:

I suspect what we're going to see is that the vast, vast majority of small film festival submissions are going to be on digital anyway. Amateur filmmakers can't afford film. Even stuff shot on film is going to be sent on DVD for review. (If you can afford film, you can afford to transfer it). Now, if the filmmaker insists on film projection, and it's a really good film that will put people in seats and make your film festival successful, then maybe you need to find a projector. But I suspect it won't be that way.

Kris is correct, don't make an anti-film rule. You're going to get digital stuff anyway, so don't worry about it.

This is exactly what I thought. We most likely aren't going to get any film submissions anyways, so why not play up the digital video thing? We're hip, we're fresh, we're in touch with the struggling auteur. It's the BFB-DV Fest! More acronyms = more style!

I think I've got a plan now. I will make a short film this summer (hopefully y'all will give me a hand) and enter it in some small film festivals. Hopefully this will give me an idea (if I'm actually accepted anywhere) of what does and doesn't work film fest wise. I think, tentatively, we should plan on having the film fest in October of '09. Until then we should make a webpage, price venues, and put out a call for submissions no later than May '09. We got any web design artists in the house?

I got dibbs on the rights to the movies about bachelor parties and Olson's kickball team.

Can I enter cell phone videos of me dancing to Bon Jovi into your film festival??? I think I would win hands (and knees) down.

P.S. I learned an important lesson last night. Don't jump off of picnic tables onto a concrete floor on your knees. It may feel ok at the time, but the next morning, it will hurt like #@&%
